Spicejet, Indigo down more than 17% over 2 sessions as new virus strain haunts

MUMBAI: Airline stocks tumbled more on Tuesday as the new strain of coronavirus which is said to be 70 per cent more transmissible has impacted travel plans and triggered fears of fresh curbs in the country.

The new strain of the virus has pushed countries to announce travel bans to and fro UK even as the world heads into Christmas and New Year holidays.

At 9:34 am, SpiceJet was down 9.46 per cent to Rs 82.80, while InterGlobe Aviation dropped 3.61 per cent to Rs 1,452.75. Both these stocks have dropped more than 17 per cent so far this week.

Separately, the Maharashtra government issued its own set of travel guidelines, making institutional quarantine for 14 days mandatory for all those travelling from Europe and the Middle East on arrival.

Passengers coming from other countries will be checked, have their hands stamped and be home quarantined, said the circular from chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.
