Capitol Police officer reportedly dies, chief resigns after siege

Mob attacking the Capitol was unprecedented but hardly surprising

A Capitol Police officer has died after the siege of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, and the department’s chief will resign, according to reports Thursday.

CNN reported the officer’s death late Thursday, with few other details, saying only it was due to “events stemming from Wednesday’s riot.” The officer was the fifth death from the siege, in which one woman was shot to death by police and three others died from medical emergencies.

Steven Sund, chief of the Capitol Police, announced his resignation Thursday, after facing blistering criticism for his department’s failure to keep the mob at bay. His resignation is effective Jan. 16.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had called for Sund’s resignation earlier in the day.
